Cost of building a garage?

has anyone built a single garage (brick/block) and have a rough idea how much it will cost? We are looking to extend current lounge into garage, and then build a seperate garage. Can only persuade DH it's a good idea if I can securely rehouse his bikes/windsurf boards/toys!

We got told by a surveyor 8 yrs ago it could be around 8k. But no formal quote

Me! Its just finished and cost us around £8,500 exc VAT (sorry don't have invoice to hand and its part of a bigger project). Block garage, roughcast and includes electricity supply. They used part of the base of the old garage so saved some money there. Ours will fit a car plus loads of storage space. I didn't think we needed it so big but due to the base already being there it kind of made sense.
