Can you stain a wooden worktop and then use hardwax on top?

Just wondering...thinking of buying a cheap beech worktop and staining it a better colour before using hardwax oil.

Any thoughts? It probably won't work will it?

I have got a pot of Howdens hardwax which I was hoping to use but no matter.

rather than stain, use a wood dye such as Colron.

Yes

Because the colour is independent of the finish, it does not vary with thickness and wear, and is easiert to touch up.
