wood burning stove installation

viewed a house yestaday and gave fallen in love with. open plan down stairs.
I'd like to put a wood burning stove in the lounge it has a chimney breast but they've put shelfs in the whole for entertainment gadgets.

I'd obviously get someone out to look at it and do it for us but the thing that's just struck me is their isn't a chimney breast in the bedroom above so thinking it may be a false breast in the lounge.

does anyone know if it's possible to have a Woodburner with set up?

Is the downstairs chimney breast on an external wall? If so the flue could go outside.

Yep, even if it's a false chimney breast, it's not an issue if it's an outside wall. Re flu would just go outside, either one if those metal pipes you can see on the side of the house or a 'proper' flu in brick that will be on your outside wall.

Note: it can actually be easier if that's the case as there is no complicated issues with the chimney, how it's lined etc (esp in ild houses) which seems to be the nightmare of people installing wood burners.

Nope it's not on the outside wall Hmm and their isn't an option to put it on an outside wall either as the other walls has a door into the hallway.

It's a semi so the walls it's on is the attached side

You can run a flue up the inside, we have just been looking at this but it's not cheap, we have been given a ball park figure of £5000.

We had this scenario in our last house where it turned out not to be possible to have a woodburner. Can you build a chimney breast into the bedroom above? In our case we couldn't as that was the only 'useful' wall and the bed had to go against it.

Yes their is possibility to have a breast in the bedroom as the bed could go on the other wall.

dh doesn't feel we need a Woodburner and that an electric stove will be just as good and cheaper to install but it's me that's home all day and I'm a really cold person and I think with the open plan it'll keep it warmer and it'll look nicer Grin

Woodburner will look and feel much nicer IMHO. And you'll be able to turn the heating off. They are £££ to install though. We've just had one put in and the fitting alone cost £2500 (with an existing chimney in place). Best money we've ever spent though!

Go and speak to someone at your nearest stove shop and explain the situation. They might not come and do a survey as you haven't bought the house but should be able to give some general advice on how they can get a flue to vent outside. They might be able to do something about boxing the flue in as it goes through the bedroom?

A log burner is great. Dh wasn't sure about us getting one either. He reckoned we should get one of the gas ones which look quite real. He said it'd be a pita to light it, empty the grate, etc. he loves it more than me now we've got it.

Hello all, first time on mumsnet, my partner showed me the discussions.

I'm a HETAS engineer with my own wood burning stove business, after reading the above posts it looks like you will have to have the twin-wall isulated flue system installed internally through your property, approx cost would be between £3,700 to £5,000 for installation and material, this would not include stove.

You also have to consider- where will you store wood? If you buy in bulk (ie a pick up truck load) it's much cheaper, but you'll need a dedicated log store outside your house. And then a place to store logs inside just before burning- so whats the flooring/ space like next to chimney?
I have a woodburner- wouldn't be without one now, but it is a lot more work.
And lots more dust. Lots.

Forgot to say, if you're planning to cut wood yourself, you will need to store it cut for at least a year to season it.

Thanks jake ill load the laptop up and have a look.

The house comes with a huge outhouse shed thing so the plan would be to store it in their.

Double check the upstairs situation. Ours is in our bedroom next to a built in wardrobe so its not easily spotted or identified as the chimney breast.

theirs a chimney in the back bedroom but not one in the dining room.

we're going to have another look this week at the house so I can look at things better
