Choosing kitchen wall tiles?

We live in a council house (ie rented) which could do with new tiles in the kitchen. The current ones are over 25 years old and have had a bit of a hard life. We are permitted to replace them, but the housing corporation won't do it for us (hardly surprising as they have other things to spend their money on. The tiles are functional and safe, just very battered).

We would like something reasonably classic but not completely boring, but I just have no idea where to start. Do you have any ideas for styles which are not too out there but not too boring either? The kitchen cabinets are a pale buttermilk yellow and I'm at a loss to know what would go with that.

I love metro tiles - others will say they're over but I don't care Grin. I use them in all my developments because they are a classic shape but come in some great colours and they're eady to do yourself. Tons of Tiles have lots at reasonable prices.

Thanks for the tip lala. I really like them too and have been told a lot that they're 'over'. However, given that we plan to keep the tiles for at least ten years and they will hopefully last longer than that (I guess we won't be living here forever so they will be passed on to the next tenant) then whatever tiles we use will be 'over' by then surely? I figure it's better to get something we like.

We will be doing it outselves too so that's even better.

Really?I was looking at going for something similar to this though tbh if they aren't 'in' I don't particularly care as I like the look if them and they will complement my dark grey kitchen units and white quartz worktops (which probs aren't in anymore either)
Out if interest what is seen as in now? Surely there can't be that many options anyway

I'm seeing these sorts of tiles more and more round us which I like but I think will definitely date. Also very flat neutral colours.

OMG!! Think ill stick with my boring 'out' grey tiles Smile

lala I've seen some like that too (family member chose them), they look great in the family member's house. In my little house they would look shocking I can't imagine the council would be too thrilled with us either.
