I love Otley!

Stumbleine · 09/03/2015 22:57

All have quite different feels. Otley does not have a train station in case you were looking to commute into Leeds/Bradford.

wufti · 10/03/2015 16:49

Likely is lovely, good train service to Leeds, close to Ilkely Moor!! But normally pricy

wufti · 10/03/2015 16:49

Ilkley is lovely even, flaming spell checker

ValancyJane · 10/03/2015 20:01

All really nice areas to live in, in my biased opinion! Ilkley is absolutely lovely but pretty expensive, Otley is nice and a bit cheaper - but no train station (though a bus connection to Leeds and to the train station at Menston which is a five minute drive away and has free parking there if you drive), Guiseley is a cheaper than Ilkley and Otley, but not quite as 'nice' IMO (though nothing wrong or dodgy about the area itself). Ilkley and Otley both have a nice community feel and lots of little local pubs and fairs/festivals etc, and scenery is nicer than Guiseley. Yeadon and Menston which are close to Guiseley are also decent areas, I also know people that adore Ben Rhydding (a little village out near Ilkley).

If you're trying to find a house most get listed on Rightmove, though there is a Buy and Sell group on Facebook for the area with quite a lot of members and sometimes rental houses get listed there too - if you post there someone might know of something decent in the area.

I live locally, trying to not out myself too much but do PM me if you need any more info :)

MrsH27 · 10/03/2015 20:07

Thank you for info

Do you need to be commuting to a certain place for work? I'd also look at Menston as pp mentioned, and Baildon which is also very close (and lovely! I live there Grin)

PiratePanda · 10/03/2015 20:12

Lived in the area for seven years, miss it very much.

Do you need the train to Leeds or Bradford? If so, consider Menston and Burley-in-Wharfedale. Both lovely villages (Burley especially, with two excellent primary schools), with the added value of being slightly cheaper in fare to Leeds or Bradford than Ben Rhydding or Ilkley.

They're all wonderful places, with slightly different vibes. Guiseley is more of a suburb of Leeds, so not very villagey, but cheaper. Otley is an old-fashioned market town - think folk festival, real ales, old-fashioned market. Burley, Ben Rhydding, Ilkley all slightly more middle-class (and bits downright posh) but not in a bad way. Villages and towns on the train more expensive than those not, but the X5 bus into Leeds is very good so not impossible.

What are you looking for in terms of vibe?

My DH will be travelling to Keighley for work (by car) ,we don't want to live there so are looking for a nice area with a reasonable commute .

We are viewing a property at pool in Wharfedale on Friday (Acorn Way) .Any info on this area would again be greatly appreciated .

Pool is lovely! We saw a few nice places to rent there. Silsden is close to Keighley and I believe it's quite nice there too. I think you can't really go that wrong in this general area.

HcachumBabow · 11/03/2015 13:28

Skipton is lovely and a very easy commute to Keighley either by car or train.

Bingley is also worth looking at, especially up in Eldwick.

JacquesHammer · 11/03/2015 13:35

Pool is lovely but a LONG way from Keighley to commute every day - I did Keighley to Harrogate for an event last week and it took me 50 minutes to get from Keighley to Pool due to the level of traffic.

I'm surprised to see you say you don't want to live in Keighley. I wouldn't want to live in central Keighley either but certainly don't write off areas like Oxenhope, Oakworth, Riddlesden, East Morton without a good look. Also going the other direction Steeton and Silsden then as far out as Skipton (wise people already mentioning this)

Remember anything with a LS postcode is going to add ££ onto your costs.

FelixFelix · 11/03/2015 15:00

Jacques that's why I have a BD postcode Grin

JacquesHammer · 11/03/2015 15:04

Me too. Grin

MrsH27 · 11/03/2015 15:44

We have looked at Skipton (know it really well) not many properties available at the moment .Would be really interested to know a bit more about Oxenhope Oakworth etc Jacqueshammer .
Really appreciate all this advice .

You could do worse than Saltaire; on the trainline between Leeds and Skipton and some lovely housing. But for what it's worth I think you want Skipton.

Pool in Wharfedale is WAY to far to commute (by car, especially in bad weather) as you have to go over or round Ilkley Moor. Ilkley would be OK. Silsden also as others have suggested.

Why not Keighley itself?

Workingmum34 · 15/03/2015 11:02

When we were looking for our first house we were looking in Otley, Guisely or Ilkley and ended up just outside Saltaire. Great train links to Leeds and Keighley with a ring road to there which is fast. The actual mill houses in the village are quite small but Nab Wood, Moorhead get you a lot more for your money. Plus lots of good local primary schools and an outstanding secondary school (Beckfoot) if you live the opposite side of the main road to the village. There are lots of local independent cafes and shops, plus access to parks and countryside withough the Leeds tax.
