Can anyone help me regarding white bi-fold doors?

Does anyone have white bi-folds?

Our first preference is for white bi-folds doors at the back of our North-East facing extension (or even French doors or sliding doors for that matter) to make it as light and bright as possible and to match the white window frames. However when we've spoken to glazing companies for quotes I think they are gently trying to dissuade us. Mainly because they say the black rubber between the doors is too stark and if you get white rubber the quality and longevity is not as good. Another issue is it is more noticeable if they are scratched or marked. As for popularity, the different shades of grey are more in vogue at the moment.

If you have white bi-folds how do they stand up to wear & tear, is the black or white rubber between the doors an issue, would you recommend them? Anything else I should know?

I see them on Houzz all the time so I can't be the only person going this way.

Thanks!

We have them - can't say I've ever noticed the rubber? Ours are engineered softwood and were cheap as chips.

They do get a bit grubby, but they wipe clean when I can be bothered.

Thanks for that Teddy Bee. Can I ask where did you get them from and how long have you had them?

If they are engineered wood does that mean you don't have problems with them expanding/contracting due to the weather?

When the doors are shut, can you see the rubber? Is it black?

Thanks!

They've been in a year and came from Vibrant Doors. The weather strip is white and eminently replaceable if need be. It just slides in and out.

These ones.

Wow, they are less than half the price of most aluminum doors! Thanks for the link.

We've got white wooden bifolds, they're painted the same colour as the window frames. A local joiner made them.

Wow, they are well priced! Thanks for the link.

I haven't got them but planning a kitchen extension next year and have been researching them. I was thinking of white aluminum in particular - ones by Vufold look ok. I'm going to go to the Grand designs show at the NEC later this year as they'll be on show alongside other companies.

My builder wanted to put in UPVC bifold doors. I've seen them. They looked less nice. Probably would last longer, but for that price I figured I could just replace in five to ten years! They do look lovely and the action is fine. We've had them open all day today.

BuzzardBird · 08/03/2015 19:48

Ha, you would be knee deep in water if you had done that here today Teddy but I really want to replace the hideous half wall/hall window thing we have now and when it's sunny it gets so hot!

I have them. Our black seals look fine. You can see them when closed. However would advise going to a homes show to look at as many as possible first as some definitely have seals that are a bit chunky. It was a deciding factor for us in what we chose.

Thanks everyone for your replies. I need to find a showroom with white bi-folds to view for myself.
