Brown stain on ceiling :(

I'd really appreciate any help on this.

A brown stain has appeared on a 1st floor ceiling (the spare room bedroom ceiling). It's linear if that makes sense, not a big blob.

It's not underneath the bathroom that's on the second floor.

I'm stressed out. Could it be the roof? Who do I call even to come and look at / fix it?

Thanks very much in advance.

What is above that room?

The main bedroom is directly above the spare room where the brown stain is. This main bedroom is in the attic, and all seems ok in there.

I did notice about a week ago that when I went right down under the eaves in the main bedroom, it felt very cold, and I thought at the time, 'hmm, it's as if the wind is whistling straight in'.

We moved in recently.

Yeah, get someone to look at guttering, and maybe a plumber. A pipe could have a leak. Perhaps it was there before you moved, but they painted it.

Does the stain feel damp? It might just be that an old stain has been painted over without stain block being used first and it's now come through the paint. But, yes, you need to investigate.

water leak.

If the room above is not a bathroom, it might be the radiator pipe.

p.s.

if the line is straight, and in line with one of the walls, it may be that water is seeping through the invisible crack where two sheets of plasterboard join. If you look hard enough you may be able to discern the joints, or the filled nail heads along them. Boards are about 2400x1200mm or fractions thereof.

Put some pics up.
