where to live when working in Canary Wharf

hi, we arrived here in UK in august and picked up the first available property in Purley. The hilly landscape is a problem for me since i have to travel up and down the hill to drop our 6 yr old to school. The school being 30 mins away on a bus ride is another issue. Husband works in Canary Wharf, which is a about 1.2 hours one way commute. The town being sleepy, (no shopping except the Tesco is a problem, for everything else you have to travel to Croydon)

now we are looking to change and solve at least the school travel and shopping issues..

Been searching around this topic, and found some past discussions. Wonder if there is any fresh advice/recommendations available.

Any of the lines where you change at Stratford are a good start because you can hop on the Jubilee line there. So Central line loop which is zones 4/5 and has some nice property. Overhead line out towards Brentwood, C2C from Southend which comes into Fenchurch Street but you can change onto the DLR at Limehouse then go to Canary Wharf.

Kind of depends on budget and how far out you want to be. For example, Chelmsford is 40 mins from Stratford then another 10 or so to CW. Or you could go south and use overground to Sevenoaks etc then get on the DLR at Lewisham.
