£2000 to have a freaking shower screen made fitted!!! Are there any alternatives?

Just received a quote for a 1900mm x 1200 shower screen, including a 600mm wide fixed panel under a sloping roof, and a 600mm wide door.

£1000ish for the glass, £650 for the fittings (what are they made from???), PLUS VAT. Fitted.

Total £2020. Shock

Does this sound reasonable?

Do we have any alternative? This quote is from the only glassmaker in town that will make shower screens.

That's more thank it entire bathroom cost! Including screen.
I've no idea tbh. Other than a shower curtain.

Than our*

I think I would look at ways to make the space fit a standard off the shelf shower door.

duchesse · 28/02/2015 09:33

I think it's a ridiculous quote. So ridiculous in fact that I'm going to tell them it's way too high and to drop the prices somehow or we'll not go ahead with it. It's not like we'll be accepting this quote.

My sister's walk in shower enclosure in France cost £300. If needs be we can have the screen made up in France and get someone to bring it over here and fit it and still be under that quote.

the only glassmaker in town that will make shower screens.

I suspect this is part of the problem!

duchesse · 28/02/2015 09:36

Yup- there used to be two, but they merged. I shall be seeking quotes from Taunton as well. It's only 20 mn away.

If you have the measurements now then can you do it by the power of the internet and get a builder to fit it?

Pinkje · 28/02/2015 17:28

Have you looked at Matki showers, they'll do bespoke sizes (doubt they'll be much cheaper though).

MILdesperandum · 28/02/2015 19:57

try here you can enter your dimensions online and everything is priced online (including fittings). It sounds like you have an unusual (non rectangular) shape so you may need to email the guys directly for help - I found them amazingly helpful and responsive. We were able to collect but I think they do deliver.

ValancyJane · 01/03/2015 16:17

We recently got a new bath and shower fitted (along with new taps, plumbing, a load of tiling AND a shower screen!) and that only came to £1700! I would definitely be ringing around for more quotes if I were you.

duchesse · 02/03/2015 18:26

DH has bitten the bullet, spent a weekend forensically measuring the space, and has order a screen from an online place for less than £500, so crossing fingers!

Duchesse, we have exactly the same problem, was quoted £2500 yesterday.

Where have you ordered now if I may ask?
I am tempted to make a template out of chipboard and then measure it. Forensically, yes, that sounds about right. I'd have a breakdown if the screen was delivered and I measured it wrong.

CoffeeBeanie · 03/03/2015 19:17

And I'm in London not on a Scottish island. I had three quotes, all above £1.5k

duchesse · 03/03/2015 21:06

Coffee- here. They haven't delivered ours yet (only ordered two days ago) so you might want to hold fire till I can confirm that they are bone fide!

Lepaskilf- problem is it is a very non-standard shape, under a sloping ceiling. We can't make the screen lower than where the slope starts or it will be pointless having a screen.

PS: Our glassmakers requested a template made of hardboard- it's easier to cut neatly I think but it is a total pain to keep flat. DH made a template out of hardboard and checked it fitted perfectly, then measured that as well as the space.

This is the shower screen page of the site we used.

Thanks duchesse. I have come across this site before on one of my searches, it just looks so confusing.
If I'd known how much this screen would set us back I'd never have put a shower under the slope.
Will ring them tomorrow.

we had one made in Swansea it was 2 metres long by 1.75 metres high it only cost £386 and the fixings for the wall and floor was a further £70. it is a walk in shower. the shower tray was 2 metre by 1 metre and cost £220. hope that helps
