Changing kitchen work tops

We have a small and inefficiently laid out kitchen, with work tops and units that are not to our taste. We've looked into replacing it, and until we can afford to extend, we aren't going to get anything that is any more than nicer looking despite spending thousands of pounds. So we'll wait a few yeas to extend I think.

Thankfully, the kitchen is in decent condition so in the meantime we're going to paint the cupboards and have already changed the floor. The tiles are inoffensive.

My question is - can we replace the work top while keeping the units? Has anyone done this? Who would you pay to do it? A joiner maybe?

TIA.

Yes we did just the worktops and left the units. Did it ourselves and it wasn't that difficult. Bought a new sink and hob that fitted in as they needed replacing. Did the utility worktops at the same time and it makes such a huge difference to the whole look without replacing the entire kitch.

We did this but had to change tiles as they were damaged in the process.
It made a huge difference at not a huge cost (laminate work tops)
We got a joiner to do it.

We did this, it cost about £400 if i recall, for 2 lengths approx 3m long (no corners) of benchmarx laminate fitted by a chap I found on mybuilder or Checkatrade. He wasn't exactly a master craftsman but worked hard! It made such a massive difference, I wish I'd done it earlier. We also replaced handles and put down new vinyl flooring, lots of people thought it was a new kitchen (as long as they didn't look too closely!)

Oh yes had to fit gas hob and sink too, which made it more expensive. Cost of just laminate was about £120.
