Planning permission refused.

Just after a bit of advice.

We live in a conservation zone - semi detached, approx 120 years old. Because it's a conservation zone there's no permitted development.

The house attached to ours has a loft extension - side and back dormer. We've applied to do the same which will even them up. We put in a pre-planning application and made some changes on their advice but they've come back now with an outright no. Their suggestion is that we build a double height extension on the side of yet house which will a) cost a fortune and b) be completely out of character with the house.

We've spoken to the council today and the man told us it might not be the right decision! The conservation officer is ringing back on Monday.

Anyone have any idea of what a likely outcome might be?

I think it's very likely you will get it due to next doors having done it. I don't think their refusal holds up to appeal if it's really the same as next doors.

Has the conservation area officer refused, or the council?

Can't see how they can refuse if next doors have done the same, but was their extension done many years ago and they've tightened the rules now?

Am waiting for planning permision now so feel your pain!

They did have it done years ago! It's the planning manager who has refused.

A conservation area isn’t as strict as say a listed property so keep trying!

Good luck! :D

I'm in a conservation area, we haven't been refused PP, yet!

I'd definitely appeal.

PotteringAlong · 20/02/2015 18:16

We will appeal - we have it in writing from them that it should be fine and them bam!

When we had our extension done our plans were given a verbal ok then had planning permission refused unless we incorporated a garage in our side extension. This was apparently council policy to alleviate parking problems. we stuck to our guns and kept repeating that they'd initially said yes - and pointed out that we can park 2 cars on the drive therefore not on the road anyway. They backed down. sounds like you have a similar chance of being successful given what your neighbours have done.
