Smallest size ensuite / wetroom

Our house is lovely and ticks every box apart from we only have one shower (no bath) and would like to add a further shower room. The space we have in mind is a bedroom 18' x 5'2" (it is a strange size and shape but actually works ok). We are thinking of taking the existing fitted wardrobe out and adding an ensuite shower/loo or a wetroom of around 6' x 5'1".

My concern with a wetroom is having the walls prepared which will effectively make the room even narrower once tiles etc are in.

We have a healthy budget so could buy specialist fixtures and fittings if it made it possible. Question is - will it fit in?

We just stayed in an hotel with frosted glass ensuite. No tiles on the walls at all and it was really compact. I googled some images of it for you.

You got me wondering, so I just measured! Our (non-en suite, non wet room, non specialist) shower room is 5'2 by 6'2. We could afford to lose some of the longer length too, there is space round the loo.

The shower is not huge but not the smallest available either, we were just really careful when choosing how & where the shower door opened, and chose a small sink. I expect it depends on where your door is, but if you can hang it to open outwards, that'll help.

I'd love to see how your bedroom works with those proportions - how do you have the bed, if you don't mind me asking?

It's bigger than our ensuite which is 4'5" x 6'2". We have a decent size shower (not huge but bigger than you get in many hotels) and normal basin with cupboard underneath built into granite top that runs over back of toilet. In mornings there is sometimes one of us in shower, DS standing at toilet and one at basin. So plenty big enough! Was also built into corner of bedroom (not by us) so bedroom now a bit small but fine.

Our en-suite shower room is small, the dimensions are longer but narrower than yours. 7'5 by 2'4 tiled. Ours is all in a row toilet, sink then shower. The door is in the middle opposite the sink and opens into the bedroom. It is recently redone and very sleek and modern. We don't have a radiator in there and the towel rail is on the back of the door. I think if you can get the layout right it is manageable.

Our is a bit of a back up with an electric shower in case of boiler problems, we both mainly shower in the main bathroom and just use it when we have guests

amateur the door (which is slimmer than normal, maybe 2' rather than the usual 2'7") is on the long wall, about halfway down. Down one end we have a single bed with small bedside chest and a Chest of drawers at the foot of the bed. Then up the other end there is a large built in wardrobe along the rest of the long wall, with desk along the short wall. However the previous owners had it as a double room - pics from Zoopla so show it how they had it.

The only thing I don't like is that it is obviously an extension, even when you're in there, but that's a small price to pay for a 4th bedroom. The (extremely specific) area we wanted simply doesn't have purpose built 4 beds.

Thanks everyone for taking the time to reply. We already have 2 girls and hope to have another DC so tryin to "futureproof" while we still have some cash! Sounds like we should be ok with the ensuite, and may even be able to have a proper shower!! (the plans on Houzz and another site suggested wetroom was the only way to go) Thanks especially to Ruhrpott for taking time and sharing their fancy-pants hotel room

Actually I would be careful about the wet room idea in such a small space. If you have a drench shower, they pump out a lot of water. The floor will be wet and then you might want to use the loo before it dries. Even efficient drainage does not take all the water away. Also, what flooring have you got in the bedroom? The water may well get onto that because you do not have a snug fitting door on the wet room. We have glass panelling plus glass door on ours but the bathroom is huge . You will never contain all the water in the "shower" area when it is so small. I would honestly go for a slimline shower tray or a Bette floor and a glass surround. You will spend your life on a wet floor and be worried about the bedroom floor. Always get underfloor heating for such a project too. This helps keep condensation down - a lot.

I wanted to thank you all for taking the time TO respond all those months ago.

We have had the work done now and we have a lovely BATHROOM!! It is around 6'6" x 5'3" (although we had to have a tiled shelf as the soil pipe was hidden behind previous fitted wardrobe!) so the actual floor space is around 6'6" x 4'5". The bath is a short bath but we still managed a 150cm one (since I am only 153cm not a huge concern) We could have gone full length but we wanted a bit of space for a small unit for towels as we have recently lost our airing cupboard.

It cost around £5.5k all in with a local company. They project managed it all.
