Enlarging a window

Has anyone enlarged a window downwards? How much did it cost if you did, and did you need building regs?

I want to bring a bit of light into an internal landing which is very dark (due to extension basically cutting it off from light). We want to make the original tiny loo window a longer version, down to about twelve inches off the floor.

Where are you, does make a difference if it's London. This is a simple job for a builder, just to knock out existing bricks and depending on window size may need a lintel, then plaster to make good.I don't think you will need regs for this. Is this 2nd floor? If so builder may want some scaffolding just to work safely and that can be expensive.

I would suggest you look at window sizes and cost up a few options and then give a few general builders a call. My guess is ?£1k. A larger window would be more attractive but you could also consider a sun tunnel.

London - I might give our joiner a call in that case as he built most of our extension and our neighbour's too and did a nice job. I know he won't rip me off, but wasn't sure if it needed a glazing firm or not!
