Can anyone give some advice about whether it is a total waste of money to extend in stages? We have this kind of layout at the moment and have planning permission to level off the back of the house (so extend the rear reception room in line with the kitchen to create a big kitchen / diner / family room) and then go double storey behind the bathroom and all along the side of the house (about 1.75m) to create 4th bedroom and ensuite, and make the small bedroom wider. On the ground floor at the side, we'd create a utility and in the current plans its a half garage but could potentially be a study.
We are desperate for a 4th bedroom but could live without everything else at the moment. The 4th bedroom could go on top of what is now the kitchen extension - we'd need to create a wall to make a corridor to access it (so losing space in the bathroom in the short term) and the room would be small (but OK for DD2).
It that ridiculous though when in a couple of years we'd want to go ahead with the rest of the extension? I don't think we thought it would cost as much as it will (when we had the plans drawn up) so we don't have the funds to go ahead with it all now, but will do in a couple of years. I just don't want to wait that long for a 4th bedroom?
Any advice welcome!
