Do I need a chimney liner for an open fire?

We have an open fire in our Victorian terrace and I'm pretty sure the chimney isn't lined. Do I need a chimney liner?

We had the sweep round recently and he told us off for burning damp wood (which apparently makes lots of soot and can eat through the brickwork) but he didn't mention getting it lined.

The house was pretty unmodernised when we bought it, so I doubt very much it's been done.

I'm also wondering since sometimes when we light the fire, I can smell smoke in the upstairs bedroom.

Guess it's not cheap though.

Anyone had this done or have any advice on whether it's necessary?

It depends. Ours didn't need lining.
