Kitchen/diner or kitchen/diner/den

We are building a new house and there is one room off the kitchen with a pot bellied stove. It's a large room measuring 4 metres x 4.9 metres. Should we use this as a dining room only or should we stick a corner sofa in it and try and make it a hang out space aswell? We have a large island in the kitchen which we will sit at for casual dining so I'm reluctant to use the space solely as a dining room which won't get much use. My reservation us that it might look odd to have a sofa in the corner of a dining room...even a fairly casual open plan dining room... WWYD?

Hiya every one works differently but we have an upside down and back to front L shape kitchen/dinner and back down the other side to make a square is the front room (not open plan) so I use the kitchen as our day time room and front room as our quiet/evening/guest/adult room so the top half of the L (along the back of the house has a table with 6 chairs then a sofa and tv then right at the end a bean bag and all the play toys seems to work for us.
I've include 2 photos one is from kitchen door and behind breakfast door is table and other is sat at the table. Hope it helps in giving you some ideas xx

I think you should try to fit the sofa in. It can then be used as living space. I have moved my dining table around so I can fit a sofa and TV in. Crystal your layout looks fab for kids.

Do you have another dining room? Surely you'll want a table somewhere even if only for dinner parties, christmas, sunday lunch etc?

I would try to get a sofa in if you can though. We have a very large house but actually the area most frequently used is the kitchen (we have a table in the kitchen and a separate dining room too) which opens onto a snug area with two sofas and a tv. Its all very sociable and whilst the intention was that it was a space for the DCs whilst we would use the living room in the evenings, most of the time we end up in the snug once the DCs are in bed rather than going through to the more grown up living room.

Just have a back up plan of where stuff could be moved to in need extend the table for Xmas etc.
in our case toys went to bedrooms bean bag move to front room and sofa got moved to the end this made room for 11 at Christmas.

Do it. A small, not too squashy sofa and a tub chair or something might be less "living roomy" than the corner sofa.

I have just ordered a purple leather sofa for our kitchen. I am hoping it will be wipeable and able to withstand my messy kids. It makes life easier if I can watch at least one of them whilst making the dinner.
