Wallpaper in a kitchen

I'd quite like to put some wallpaper in our kitchen, on the wall that has the hob. We don't have a splash back apart from stainless steel behind the hob so I was wondering if I could use Matt or satin varnish over the wallpaper. Has anyone done this?

I haven't tried this - but you could put a clear glass panel over it?

Maybe - we don't have tiles because of all the sockets though so glass might be tricky to fit.
