Chalk paint etc on interior woodwork - skirting boards etc

Will this look ok? Has anyone done it? I don't want the traditional white gloss on my doors, skirtings etc and was going to do them in n off white chalky paint - autentico or something like that. I have googled but just gets pages and pages of not very useful stuff about Annie Sloan.

No experience but I'd be concerned that it wouldn't withstand bumps or scrapes very well.

No don't do it, it won't last at all. you have to wax over chalk paint which is a hassle in itself and it means you can't paint over it without sanding.

Go for a matt eggshell paint instead

we have used eggshell paint for years not - much less shiny than gloss but still very hard wearing for woodwork. I do think the very chalky paints are for painting furniture and creating distressed looks and they are normally waxed over to protect the look.

I've done it straight onto a gloss dado rail, ok not as heavy traffic as skirting board, but still bloody easy as you just paint it onto existing gloss,no prep or nothing

I haven't got round to doing it yet, but was recommended this stuff to go ontop to make it hardy

To be honest - I'd give it a whirl, maybe just do a short section for a few months with the varnish on top and see how it goes as it could save you an awful lot of elbow grease.

I don't mind the waxing - I've done several bits of furniture in several layers of watered down annie sloan with wax on the top. I was going to try autentico as it looks less chalky and I don't like that thick really chalky look. I'm trying to get out of masses of sanding prior to painting as well as the shiny whiteness! It's just me and DS in the house, so not too high trafiic.

I live in the Cotswolds and am a gardener, I have been in several clients houses who have all got their woodwork painted in period colours with a matt finish. What could they be using?! I suspect something expensive going by the type of houses these are... {hmm}

It won't stand up to the bumps and scrapes IMHO.

I've done it on internal doors and regretted it. I'm going to strip them down and repaint with satinwood once the weather warms up,

I've got it on a desk and the paint on the front edge is starting to peel (after a few months). So IMHO it's not suitable for skirting boards. B&Q do a tough woodwork paint in eggshell that includes a primer & they can mix it to your colour choice.

Have a look at Mylands Marble emulsion. It is far tougher than chalk paint and has a flat finish. Not sure what the eggshell is like as they only send samples of the emulsion.

Hi - you could check to see if www.raymunn.co.uk can give you advice. Not handy to drop by as they're in London (Fulham) but do work with probably the same sorts of clients as you, but on their town residences! Maybe there's an equivalent in your area that these home owners have been using. Or a specialist painter & decorator who can advise you. Also, can you ask them how they find handling the upkeep? If they have what you like then probably best to hear it from the horses mouth, as it were....

Farrow & Ball and Paint Library are also likely favoured Cotswold interior designer brands, so look at those too, but again ask their advice!

Just read the previous post - yes, check Mylands too, their base is used by one of the designer brands, can't remember which one....could be Papers and Paints (different company to Paint Library)

The problem is I can't afford to do it the same way my clients have probably done it!

Mylands paint do what they call a "dead flat" paint for interior and exterior wood and metal. This would give you the look you're after.
