What 1 thing would you want in your dream house?

DH and I just bought our forever home, it's in our dream location, lots of space, huge garden... but it's falling apart. (The only way we could afford to buy here!) We've got a wonderful builder on board, and we've renovated before, but I wanted to canvass opinions- if you were taking a house back to its bones, what would you include when you re-did it?

It's a 5 bed Victorian detached with all the original features, albeit mouldy and crumbling. I can't wait to renovate the huge old windows, DH is excited about installing a kitchen island. I'm after inspiration- what would you be most excited about putting in?

I bought this house because it has a round window in the kitchen! No other 'features' at all! The architect must have just had a jovial 5 minutes. It doesn't even have a view, just looks out at the hedge!

Big spacious kitchen.

Very efficient central heating system.

Bathroom with both bath, and walk in shower.

Lots and lots of storage space.

NameChange30 · 29/12/2014 10:08

Underfloor heating
Utility/laundry room
Bathroom with separate bath and shower
Downstairs loo
Plenty of storage

We might be at a similar stage, although I have yet to get to the 'what I want' (if money were no object) stage. At the moment am after the following:
Structurally sound -so fix cracks, rot etc
Warm - sort out plumbing, heating, fires, draughts, insulation, roof
Secure - ensure doors can be locked
Electricity - increase supply to house and rewire

I might then get a shower! Your house sounds fab.

Lovewhereilive · 29/12/2014 10:21

A real fire or a woodburner. Failing that a view of hills/ mountains and a waterfall Grin

Lovewhereilive · 29/12/2014 10:24

Or a butler/chef/ cleaner/ masseuse

Think I need to buy a lottery ticket...

This was my wish list when we did ours

Walk in pantry with slate shelves
Ensuite with enough space for free standing bath
UFH
Ground source heat pump
Boot room
Laundry room
Separate sitting room for tv watching
Ethernet cables in every room
Appliance cupboard for kitchen kit
Walk in wardrobe
Boarded out attic for storage
Gallons of insulation
Water softener
A designated wood shed

Achieved 60% of it

FamiliesShareGerms · 29/12/2014 10:47

Underfloor heating
Properly warm bathrooms
Walk in wardrobe
Library / study just for me
Walk in pantry
Proper attic

Rojak · 29/12/2014 10:51

I know you said 1 ....

Underfloor heating
Storage with flush doors
Laundry room on upper floor with bedrooms
Home office

SwedishEdith · 29/12/2014 10:54

A properly boarded out loft with easy access - not the pull down ladder.
Towel rails / radiators in bathrooms that work independently of the heating.

OneHandFlapping · 29/12/2014 10:56

A view of the Atlantic - not that you can exactly put that in.

crapcrapcrapcrap · 29/12/2014 10:58

Oh yes, a utility or laundry room. With a pull down airing rack and kitchen units and somewhere to dry boots and coats.

Underfloor heating
Utility room
Oodles of space

Shockers · 29/12/2014 11:04

lovewhereilive, as I sit in front of my log burner, I can see the fells through an uninterrupted landscape Smile.

It's only a little house, but the view is wonderful!

JugglingChaotically · 29/12/2014 11:11

Under floor heating.
Utility room
Library
Bath with a view!
Large island in kitchen.

Not air heating through. In laws had it. Horrible! Like cross between fan heater and hairdryer. Bad of allergies, dust and contact lenses. Really dry

hollyisalovelyname · 29/12/2014 11:15

South west garden.
Really good heating system.
Laundry room. The only one of the three I actually have. Smile

Easterchuck · 29/12/2014 11:20

I forgot one.
One of those gorgeous greenhouses that are half brick and built onto an existing wall.

didn't get that either

Vajazzler · 29/12/2014 11:49

One of these.

feelingunsupported · 29/12/2014 11:59

Walk in pantry seems very popular - can someone explain what you put in them? How they're set up? Off to google them but sometimes it's better to have it explained by a real person!

We'll be extending the kitchen next year hence my nosiness. Sorry for hijacking op!

Dowser · 29/12/2014 12:02

Two bathrooms...
A walk in closet/ wardrobe
A log fire and a gas boiler with radiators
UFH especially if you're having tiled floors. They can be so cold.
Two types of lighting . Bright for craft work and soft and soothing.

At least one spacious bathroom.

I wouldn't have an aga. Friend had one. Nightmare. Was lit in winter and stayed on until late spring early summer, whatever the weather.
it was oil fired and very expensive. Well it would be as it was on 24/7

No I'd have a range cooker instead.

Would love a separate utility and a kitchen large enough to have a big table in

Would love a big walled garden too!

hollyisalovelyname · 29/12/2014 12:11

Fireplace and a couch in the kitchen is lovely if your kitchen is big enough.
