ideal dining table size for 2 adults and 2 kids

standard size for a 4 seater seems a bit of a squash and a squeeze. we always seem to need a bit more elbow room, or room between the dcs to stop squabbling

Too small as we have a 4 seater rectangular table. I agree you need to have something bigger to be comfortable.

six feet , three wide. Can comfortably seat eight. Dcs sat diagonally opposite each other when little to be as far apart as possible! This table is 29 years old, the dcs are now way past the fighting age now!, though still occupy the same seats when they come home!

we have the old version of this without the drawer DH and I sit on the drawer sides, and dcs have a fold out leaf each.

It also makes a great cards table, and can fit all adults round it, and as our dining table is in the lounge, we fold one leaf down and push it against the wall during the day (dcs eat at a toddler table for breakfast and lunch, or at the CMs and I eat on the couch next to them)

I was shocked over Christmas at just hie small my parents kitchen table is! We used it for every meal an no way would I manage to get even 4 people round it , let alone 2 adults and 4 kids:)
But OP don't forget that your children just keep growing! My 12 yr old ds is taller than me and the 14 yr old dd is only marginally smaller. Best to plan for adult size diners from the outset

have a fair amount of space to fill, 2.7m width. and will want an extendable table anyway. would ideally like a round but there doesn't seem to be too many of them. ho hum

but having said there's a fair bit of room don't want to fill every inch of it with dining table we might not use all of. seems to be a big leap in size from 4 to 6. perhaps I'm just overthinking this

If you have an aqequate sides dining table, you'll find that it's in constant use by a child wanting to play with fiddly lego sets or do a pile of drawings, or adults with their own stuff to spread out. Ours is about 4' round and fits 4 around it, while up against the wall in a room about the same width as yours. It fits 6 easily when it's pulled out a bit. It replaced one that was about 3'6 round, which extended by about 20".

Yep - that one's a nice size for 4 people in a smallish room.

This is a similar thing to our old one. It became a bit wobbly with age, though and we ended up adding a lot of extra brackets.

will also be able to turn any table around so long length not against 2.7m wall, then doesn't matter how long out goes if needed

We have a drop leaf with the row of drawers down the middle ikea jobby, and it's not the one.

Plenty of space, but everyone has knees banging into something. We're going to replace it with something a similar size, but without the gatelegs.

You can fit 4 people (2 toddlers, one of whom eats anything within reach, and climbs to get anything not in reach), plus food on it no problem, and 2 visitors would be fine if not for the aforementioned knee problem.

It came from IKEA years ago - they don't do it any more but I'm sure there must be others out there. The style is very flexible (except that in ours at least there's no storage for either of the 2 leaves, they have to be tucked away in a cupboard).

Ours is 44" across & the leaves are 18" so it's 62" long with one in & 80" with both. We can get 6 chairs round it with no leaves; with 1 leaf in it easily sits 6-8, & with both leaves 8-10, or more with fairly narrow chairs.

The dividing pedestal is much better than legs as you can position the chairs anywhere.

Until fairly recently we had a 6' x 3', but as it's just the two of us at home now we got rid and bought a smallish (48" diameter) antique circular one (oak Arts & Crafts) which is still large enough for when DS & his GF visit, but could accommodate six at a push. We do have an extra long (7.5') one in the kitchen though!
