where to live in York?

We're planning to move back to York in the next 18mths after 10 years in London. We both grew up in the York area and went to Fulford school. We'd quite like to be in the Fulford catchment but we really like the Bishopthorpe road area and feel we'd be more at home in the city itself within walking distance of the station. Any thoughts or suggestions? The children will be 3 and 6 when we move.

Southbank/Bishopthorpe road is a very popular area with young families and there is loads to do with kids. Schools are good in that area too (Knavesmire particularly and Scarcroft). Expensive but worth it!

Just be careful re Southbank as there are a lot of Victorian terraces with huge damp problems (paid for 3 surveys, never again!). And in the long term you will be in the catchment for Millthorpe and All Saints Secondary. The Postern gate development is handy for town and Aldwark is beautiful. Have a wander round Penny Lane Court etc. Try not to get sucked into the Bishy Road hysteria, you end up with a tiny house and huge mortgage. Welcome home!

Bishy road is nice, and also has very good schools, but if you moved to Fishergate/Fulford by the river you'd be in the Fulford catchment area, and only a few minutes' walk away from Rowntree Park and Bishopthorpe Road across the Milennium Bridge.

Holly...that was one of the thoughts we'd had too. I guess it might just depend what's available when we're ready to move.

We had a wander around the Bishopthorpe Road area today and loved the easy access to the city, station and parks but a lot of the Victorian terraces did seem quite small. What are Millthorpe and All Saints schools like?

I don't know about Millthorpe, but I've heard nothing but good things about All Saints. I don't know how close you need to be to get in if you don't qualify on grounds of religion.
