Kitchen Cupboards - problem with laminate covering

7 years ago we got a new fitted kitchen. Unfortunately the supplier is no longer in business so I'm looking for advice for a problem that has occurred.

The cupboard doors are made of wood with a thick cream laminate covering applied. Unfortunately on 2 of the doors the laminate appears to have "blown" and there are large air pockets between the laminate cover and the solid wood of the door. The laminate is in excellent condition with no chips, scratches etc.

What can we do about this - and also what has caused it??

It's almost as if the glue has weakened and allowed the laminate to lift. The 2 doors look horrible so I'm desperate for a solution.

It's a known problem with what are called 'foil wrapped' doors, especially where the wrap is in one piece covering the whole door. If it's just two of the doors with a problem - they might be bigger than some of the others and near a heat source? - you could try sticking them down. It's highly likely others will go too.

If the layout of the kitchen still works for you and the carcasses are good, look into replacing the doors with something other than foil wrapped ones.

To be honest, apart from the blown laminate on the doors the kitchen is in excellent condition and I dont want to spend loads of money on it.

I was wondering if there were any companies that would peel back the laminate and re-glue it.

Hi had exactly the same problem with mine, blown on 2 or 3 doors and cracked on hinge bits kn some others, we bit the bullet and peeled them all off and painted the doors, they look great now, bought new handles as well, saved a fortune, everyone thinks its a new kitchen !

Real laminate is very hard and durable.

Your doors have vinyl foil wrap which is common on MDF doors with a faked moulded or panelled look. It comes off mostly above kettles and toasters, but I have seen it start to peel in showrooms.

I don't think its worth spending money on repairs. You can get replacement doors quite cheaply if you avoid kitchen fitting companies. Have a look on ebay for a start. I would avoid foil wrap. Measure all your doors carefully, and the distance between the hinges. I expect they will be standard sizes. Ikea may not be.

As suggested, peeling it off and repainting may be cheap but more work.

Thanks PJ - you're right, the blown laminate is on doors closest to heat sources (cooker hood and adjacent doors).

I'll look at online companies for replacements, it's so annoying though because, apart from this problem, the rest of the kitchen is in very good condition.

Overall effect looks superb....until
I buffed up the cupboards this morning and to my horror discovered at least 6 cupboards and facials trims are showing signs of being blown.
Furthermore my daughter pointed out that the £400 worktop is blowing out underneath where the dishwasher is!
It seems everywhere there is some heat/warm air there is a problem with the doors.
Ie.1:inset microwave
2:dishwasher
3:built in Bosh cookers
4:washing machine &condenser
Can't believe how bad it looks when its pointed out.
Any wise words of wisdom as to what I should do?
