New gas meter

Don't know if anyone can help but we have been to see a house that needs updating has no central heating etc and although there is a gas pipe coming into the property from the road it is capped off having never been used, it also has no gas meter. Does anyone know who I get in contact with to get one and a rough idea of how much it would cost?

Contact British Gas and ask them to get an idea - they supply and install meters for new builds for free; their website is not explicit about charges for installation at existing properties. Make sure you also ask them about their lead times for installation.

if it is an old metal pipe it might be rusty and/or damaged and/or not connected to anything in the road, in which case they will have to run and connect a new pipe, presumably at your expense.

They'll probably refer you to National Grid who are the ones who do the work.

We had ours done last year. It was approx £800 for NG to do the whole job, or NG would charge approx £400 if we could get the hole dug and filled in ourselves. We got a labourer/gardender to dig the hole (for about £50 or so).

We were quite close to the road and the pipe (a few metres away...).

We are having one installed next week for free by npower. gas pipe was still there from a few years ago so no problem with that but was told it would be £250 if it had been dead. call your supplier and national grid.
