Slate table tops?

Anyone got one? We are after a round, sturdy 150cm diameter kitchen dining table for every day use. Options seem limited. Am tempted by a slate topped table but so many questions. Are they very noisy? Is scratching a problem? Do glasses constantly break when they get knocked over? We would probably mostly have a tablecloth on if that makes a difference.

My DSis had slate placemats and coasters for many years. They were irritatingly noisy.

If you are going to cover it up most of the time, is it worth having slate for the table top? How about a slate table base instead of even, god forbid, slate placemats.....!

Not wedded to slate, just can't find wooden or other round tables I like. The slate one is in the style I like, but am worried about the noise issue and your DSis's placemats make me think I am right to be concerned. Thanks

What about polished concrete? We had our hearth done by these guys... They are really reasonably priced and you can choose the colour...
