Best value furniture?

Looking for advice on where to buy sofas, tables, beds, cushions etc as about to buy our first house after years of renting. Some of the high street chains seem relatively pricey to me...but I am looking for new stuff so I don't have the option of upcycling. Obviously durability is important, so is it possible to scrimp?!

You can't beat Ikea for value on most things.

Does it have to be 'new new' or just good condition? Ebay is marvellous for bargains in great nick.

Otherwise... ikea.

For soft furnishings and decorative homewares try TK Maxx and Homestore which is their homeware brand. Supermarkets are also good for things like basic bedding.

Ikea is great for storage and wardrobes etc but I'd be reluctant to kit the house out in it

We got a great leather suite from a local independent supplier and think it was better value than ikea

H&m home do lovely cushions etc. really good value

Dunhelm mill and Matalan have nice bits, as do asda

If you don't want flatpack, Pine Solutions are great for reasonably-priced wooden furniture. Very good customer service, too.

Antique/vintage furniture (either painted or unpainted) is usually very good value - in that it will be much better quality and more durable than the equivalent priced new stuff. Solid wood rather than MDF and veneer, proper carpentry rather than flatpack etc. But you have to be willing to have that vintage/shabby chic kind of look. It's also difficult to buy online, usually you need to find a local shop which sells that kind of thing (auction houses also good although usually unpainted).

If you want brand new and/or modern style - I would go with IKEA for lots of things (I think they have great designs) and then have the odd bit from somewhere fancier. Made.com, Alison at Home, Swoon Editions, Achica are all "cut out the middleman" suppliers so better prices than high st usually.

Warren Evans for beds - have both our bed and kids bunk beds from them. Really pleased with both quality and service.

Ikea

I second Warren Evans - we have three of their beds and love them. Plus their delivery people carry them upstairs and assemble them for you

If you're kitting out a new home from scratch it's probably worth spending more on furniture that needs to be durable and long-lasting (not to mention comfortable) - such as beds and sofa/s - and saving £ on stuff you might go off (chairs, soft furnishings etc).

Have a look in newsagents' windows for info about yard sales and one-off items - where I live there are often great bargains to be had.
