Piglet john help! Re clear varnish

Hi Piglet I was wondering if you would kindly help me solve my door troubles!

Soooo we have new engineered clear pine doors. I bought ronseal clear varnish for them but they have had two coats and don't even feel like they have been varnished at all!

Am I doing something wrong? The reason I needed the varnish was do I could prevent the dc dirty handprints all over the new wood!

is it satin varnish, or matt? It should leave a natural-looking surface. Gloss is very much looked down on, these days, and called "toffee-apple"

Wipe it with a clean damp sponge. You should find it does not soak in.

You did stir it well, didn't you?

Assuming it is the water-based varnish, you are not supposed to wet it until it had several days to harden, so don't use the sponge yet..

Thank you PJ. I will check that and get back to you but I did think it was going to be the shiny sort, like say a clear lip gloss or will I not be able to get that finish?

you can give it a coat or two of clear gloss from the same range if you like. Avoid mixing ranges.

A few more coats then. You can wipe the surface lightly with extra-fine sandpaper and clean off dust between the coats if it is less than flat.

It is easier to paint doors if you take them off the hinges and lie them flat on trestles. A thicker coat will then not run.

However it is hard to take doors off their hinges if you have not got lift-off hinges.
