moving to sussex coast

considering moving to coast maybe seaford, Eastbourne, Bexhill or hastings.would like to be near sea, countryside and long walks with dogs.any opinions on these areas???

Where are you now and what budget have you got and what do you need for it? I love Seaford but it is more expensive than the others you mentioned but for what your looking for, I think worth it. The other towns are much bigger. Hastings is quite run down but does often have a lot of money put on to it, it might make it a better investment? I don't know a lot about Bexhill. Really you need to visit and see what you think.

budget of approximately 250.000, 2 bed terrace or any house - garden very important. I'm looking for nice area for sea and countryside nearby for when children and grandchildren visit.but also some social life

living in London at moment and looking for a peaceful area with low crime/unsociable behaviour rate. with nearby independent character shops etc

I grew up in Bexhill (well Cooden actually), and my parents now live in seaford. I personally prefer Bexhill, but maybe remembering it through the rose coloured spectacles of childhood. I think you need to go and have a good look. Good luck! X

We went to Bexhill last weekend for the first time (live in West Kent) and were really pleasantly surprised - the high street has some amazing shops still (fishmonger, baker, butcher!!) although it was a bit like walking along in a 70s time warp. However there is a big retail park on the outskirts with larger brand stores.

I loved the De La Warr Pavilion and the seafront and then we found a brilliant park which the children loved. The walks around there are fabulous too. I was even trying to convince DH to think about moving there but he wasn't impressed by the idea of commuting to town from there every day....!

Ooh panic - was it Egerton Park?? I used to go there as a child if so ...

I like all those but Hastings would win for me - or a lovely village just in land?

it's worth knowing that if you are close to the seafront, salt spray will make your windows misty and your car rusty.

I think cars have far better rust protection on them nowadays, Piglet but I agree with you re windows. I reckon we are 3.5 miles from the sea & my windows get really salt covered in any gales.

Must admit I wouldn't choose Bexhill - it feels like going back to the 50's whenever I go there. Eastbourne or Hastings would be the ones for me. I am just outside Eastbourne & love it round here.

thanks for taking time to message. now I know I've lots of places to revisit before early next year. like hastings old town, been told Clive vale is nice??? regularly visit Eastbourne love the scenery of the down seven sisters park. have visited Bexhill few times but don't know much about it.don't drive a car at moment so that's one issue out of the way. I did visit a place I think near upperton? in Eastbourne - quite near beach and shops seemed really nice. will be busy on visits to places from hastings to Newhaven then inland I think

I loved that park!! Is there still a boating lake and open air pool?

Didn't see the open air pool but there was a lake and all of the park equipment looked fairly new. The children lived it, especially the 'dinosaur egg' they could sit in!

I grew up in Seaford but moved away to uni when I was 18 and didn't go back to live there permanently after that. My mum still lives there so I have visited regularly and we are now thinking about moving down there so I can be closer (she is now 84!). I like it because it is relatively quiet but you also have Eastbourne and Brighton within easy reach if necessary. The walks nearby are amazing! Expecting an offer on our house tomorrow so the move could take place soon. We may well rent first.

thankyou for replying I've just googled images of seaford I agree it looks stunning! I'm going to visit in a few weeks to have a look. I'm very excited now it looks ideal for walking the dogs etc. big bonus situated between Eastbourne and Brighton too as great memories of both places.

any thoughts on living in Rye sussex? employment, crime, scenery, walks ect much to do?

What exactly do you need Granny? write your wishlist and let's see what comes close. That's far easier than stabbing in the dark to be honest.

The countryside between seaford and eastbourne is absolutely beautiful. I live in Saltdean, which I love but prices are rising quite fast as families move out of Brighton. I have a soft spot for eastbourne.

Rye is beautiful but very small. Close to camber sands though -it's all pebble beaches down our way.

Anything like This appeal to you?

I Agree hobbes. The drive from Seaford to Eastbourne is my favourite view in the world. Whatever mood I'm in, the view always makes me smile and makes me realise how lucky I am to live here. One day, I will own the barn overlooking beachy head.

Enrique that would be very much what I'm looking for! thanks everyone for info.I went to seaford yesterday and loved it! and added bonus being on route to Eastbourne. I'm going to get to know more about seaford and stay over a few times my house going on the market after Christmas so meantime I'm going to visit different places in Sussex and stay weekends to find where I 'fit'.x

Just had a quick look on Rightmove for something that I imagined fitted your criteria to see if I could find anything in your price range that might suit.

Having worked in Eastbourne town centre for the past year, I found it had changed a lot since my visits as a child. There is quite a "chavy" element now with drunks sleeping in Hyde Gardens. So I think seaford is a better option.

Have you considered West Sussex? Worthing has the beaches and the South Downs and is closer to Brighton than Eastbourne!
