How many kitchen cupboards do you have????

Trying to plan our new kitchen. Got a plan from howdens and ikea.

They have both given different layout options. And I'm trying to decide how many cupboards I actually need?

We are a family of 4, and like to cook, have a few gadgets etc.

So how many do you have??

Not enough!
Three double wall cupboards. (The extra tall ones)
Two doubles, and a single floor cupboards.
Drawers in a unit under the hob.
Four drawers under the worktop.
I also have a utility room and a dresser in the dining room.

I have a fairly small Ikea Metod kitchen....

1 x 60*80 (but has extractor fan taking up bottom bit)

floor units
2 x 40cm drawers units
1 x 60cm drawer unit
2 x 80cm*37 deep drawer units
1 x 60cm *37 deep cupboard

1 tall unit with oven and combi in and drawers below and cupboard above.

we have plenty of space, even though all the stuff just got chucked in any old how when kitchen wss completed, and all the top shelfs are empty.

Not enough, however I am blessed with a large kitchen, 10 base units with an additional 2 sets of drawers, 9 wall units along with built in fridge freezer, washer and dishwasher.

If money was no object I would have a walk in larder with American style fridge freezer, or a full height pull out order unit. Would love a spree ate utility too.

I think you always expand to fill available space, but I am a keen cook and the kitchen is the heart of our home.

I greatly prefer Pan Drawers to floor cupboards. Things don't get lost in there, and they are big enough for kitchen machines and other large objects.

This is something I was just thinking about today as I wanted to look to replace my dated pine kitchen (any suggestions for good affordable kitchen options greatly appreciated!)in total there are 30 cupboard doors in my kitchen. 13 top cupboards, 14 bottom, 3 units of drawers. It's going to cost a bloody fortune isn't it?

yes to drawer unit my 1 60cm drawer unit, under the hob, holds all my day to day kitchenware... saucepans, plasric pots, jugs.

Not enough! Including the utility, which has mainly kitchen stuff in.
Wall: 4 and one narrow one.
Floor: 4, a set of 4 drawers, 2 narrow ones, and a double under the sink.

We put in two wall cupboards in the utility extra, and don't have a tumble drier, so that is an extra floor cupboard. The builders were we thought it was scarce on cupboards.

Oh, good question- we are planning a new kitchen too so very useful thread.
I think on another thread someone suggested that 2 x 60cm base units cost less than 3 x 40cm for the same storage (= 120cm) so watch out for that from the designers.
Obviously with two different designs you need to work out which layout works best for you / you family / your family circumstances in 5-10 years time.
I'll have an L-shape so tentatively thinking of:
2 x 60cm pan drawers - 1 on each side of oven/hob
1 x 100cm corner unit
1 x 60cm sink unit - potentially with drawer storage
A further 2 x 60cm base units, and a wine rack thing.
On the wall, I'll have 2 x 50cm units next to extractor unit, then probably another 3 of these on the other wall.
My WM/TD will be in new utility room, where I'll also have floor to ceiling cupboard space for broom / floor mop / general junk.
I'm not buying my kitchen from Magnet but I've found their online 3D planning tool really useful in plotting out what I'd like where. Ikea do one too (but I find it less user friendly).

Not enough! 2 corner base units, one run on six small drawers and 3 wall units. Get it all in though but potatoes are in the fridge!

none. unless you count the 6 if just assembled in the sitting room

and one tall oven housing and 120 of drawers next to it.

think it should be loads, and will be more than we had before. bit short on work surface though so a moveable island with some storage below.

loads - we have plenty of room some are only half full which is good for extra things at Christmas/parties etc.

We have a huge larder cupboard but not that many kitchen cupboards. We've got 3 small wall units, two base corner cupboards and one normal base cupboard. We also only have two normal drawers and two small pan drawers. There isn't really room in our kitchen for loads of cupboards if you want a table in there (a small one) and a dishwasher (which we absolutely must have). So the larder cupboard is very important. The washing machine and tumble drier live elsewhere.

We do get everything in. But do need to be a bit organised. We have an underused cupboard under the sink too, which I forgot about. And a double cupboard in the utility area too. So, more cupboard space than I imagined at first.

My mum has gazillions of cupboards. 5 double cupboards, 3 normal sized single cupboards, two wide single cupboards, two runs of drawers, five wall units, and one full-size cupboard she could fit a fridge in if she wanted (but the fridge is not built in). She has them all stuffed full of absolute shit she doesn't need. I have no idea why she think she needs so many different sets of plates, or all that baking equipment. She doesn't even cook or bake much.

One single, two half width (30cm) and one three drawer floor unit, and 8 shallow wall units. It's not enough, hence stuff on the top if them and tons stored in the oven. I hate it. Tins are in a cupboard in the garage.

Check the depth of the wall units - we have shallow ones but can just about take a dining plate - some manufacturers (mfi?) don't in all styles.

wall units commonly are 300mm deep, which fits 12" plates, BUT they have a false back which knocks about an inch off.

If you don't mind seeing your kitchen wall when you open the cupboard, you can pull the back off (it is usually painted hardboard, slid into grooves in the cabinet sides). It is at least a hundred times easier to do before hanging the cabinet on the wall.

Loads of shelves in the pantry and utility room though, so try to keep only 'everyday' stuff in the kitchen.

I'm just settling in to my new kitchen. For the first time in my life I have more cupboard space than I need. Loving it :-)

3 Tall single Pantry type units (one with a combination of shelves and drawers for food, one shelved for dishes, one with boxed in pipework behind so only deep enough for 2l bottles on shelves)
Cupboard sized drawer with 4 bins
3 double wall cabinets
2 single wall cabinets
2 banks of wide drawers
4 double under counter cabinets (including under the sink)
2 single under counter cabinets (one with internal drawers)
3 very high cabinets above built in appliances

pigletjohn you have explained another of the seven mysteries of the modern world to me (I learnt another one a while ago about putting salt in a dish washer and reading the F-- manual - who knew?)

Our island is Wall units back to back
but they are Ikea so comfortably take full size plates in the crockery cupboard that faces the camera

the main drawers (like under the hob) are also full depth being Ikea

all pipes and wires area at plinth height so still accessible even with the kitchen fitted

Like calamitous, we don't have too many units because I wanted space for a table. We are also four and do lots of baking and cooking.

We have
1 big double larder - this is worth about 3 cupboards
2 base units with doors and wire baskets
1 x 4 drawer base
1 x L shape corner - custom shelved out so no wasted space.
1x pull out bins
1x wide pan drawers (crockery/cutlery in Ikea holders)
1x double wall unit
a bit of stuff on shelves and hooks.
plus fridge, cooker,dishwasher.

space planning I found this very helpful for working out what to put where for different shapes of kitchen whilst keeping an efficient layout.

The biggest thing for me was having a big unobstructed working area between sink and cooker, I really cringe when I see kitchens with no workspace where you actually need it.

Large 280cm (9ft) floor to ceiling wall of cupboards (a mixture of drawers and cupboards with shelves)
Our fridge is also an American style fridge freezer so we store a lot in there as well.
We also have an integrated dishwasher in the kitchen
Washing machine and dryer are in the utility room

Loads - 14 base units (including one for the built in dishwasher), 8 wall units, two full height units (one is a double larder, the other houses the ovens). I thought really really really hard about exactly what cupboards and drawers would be needed - and stuck in a couple spare (including a drawer that was designated to be the drawer of crap).

If you've got a blank canvas, think really hard about how you use your space. Do you cook at the same time as doing a million other things? Are there likely to be two cooks at the same time? Do you have a place to dump a big shop so you can unpack easily? Our kitchen is divided into three "zones". Food storage, food prep and cooking, washing up. Pans go in the food prep zone. Crockery and cutlery in the washing up zone. The food prep area faces the rest of the kitchen so when cutting and chopping, I can socialise with friends or the DC.
