cheaper loft insulation

may be of use to someone - B and Q are selling 100mm thick loft insulation rolls at £9 each this weekend. Half the normal price and somewhere near what it cost when it was subsidised.

no connection, no profit for me, but pissed off at the price of the stuff!

Thank you! This gave us the nudge to finally top ours up

Best of all, the rolls shown in ad are made by Knauf and are treated with Ecose which prevents them shedding irritant dust and fibres.

Look for the word Ecose on the wrapper. The fibre is soft and brown. I will never use yellow glass fibre again.

Pigletjohn didnt know that - that makes it even better!

Is it worth taking out the old insulation then and replacing with this stuff? - or leave sleeping dusty insulation well alone

PigletJohn · 26/10/2014 09:38

I hate the yellow stuff so much that I would bag it up and take it to the tip, and hoover out the loft with my canister vac (not a domestic vac) but you haven't got to.

Buy a pack of disposable dust masks with the plastic valve on the snout.

Thanks...will bear that in mind and see how clearing the very cluttered loft goes first. If not too fractious and have space to store the stuff elsewhere or stack at one end and cover so doesn't get insulation dusty then we'll replace.

mild teeth gnashing here as we looked for ages, although we finally struck lucky by doing a deal with someone who had lots spare. It was the itchy stuff but it is in place now. Interesting sweaty work with the mask on!

and no, you don't have to take the old stuff out, just put more on top.

just shows how much we are being ripped off by what they normally charge for insulation.

I already have 250mm of loft insulation, is there any point putting in more?

PigletJohn · 26/10/2014 12:08

No.
