Mould on bathroom ceiling - how do I get rid?

I've been in this house for 3 years now and we do have a mould problem on the plastic window frames, and around some of the window returns in the bedrooms.

But the worst problem is the bathroom ceiling. I've got a lovely new bathroom (4 months old) but the mould is well and overtaking the ceiling again. I leave the window open pretty much all the time. We've had new radiator and towel radiator so the room is drier and warmer that it was before - I thought that would help, but it hasn't.

any advice on how I can get rid once and for all?

We also have an issue with mould in the bathroom. We spray it with HG Mould Remover spray (can get online or from Lakeland). It's amazing stuff, the mould just disappears without any scrubbing and it helps keep it away for a bit longer, although you do need to respray as and when neccessary. For the ceiling we spray it onto a cloth and then place the cloth over a mop head and wipe the ceiling - if you sprayed directly upwards the bleachy spray would go everywhere and all over you!

maybe you need an extractor fan in your bathroom

Watching with interest. We have this problem. Got a replacement extractor fan as existing one was broken. Made no difference. Mould is getting worse. 3/4 showers a day is the norm in that bathroom. I have bought mould resistant paint but have to get motivated to use it. :(

I too would welcome some advice on this. My current solution is to send in DS1 (the tallest person in the household) to give it a scrub every couple of months, but we could do with a lasting solution.

are you sure there are no leaks? The only time I had mould on my ceiling was when our shower tray was broken and water was leaking underneath and making the room damp. I used bleach spray and then painted with bathroom paint (is mould resistant) and the mould has not come back (shower tray was replaced 1 year ago)

Thanks! I'll get the HG spray and try the mop trick. We too have 3 or 4 showers a day in there. We have an extractor and I'm sure there's no leak - the builders would have found one when they were doing the work.

just a thought -what's the insulation situation above the ceiling?

Special um I don't really know - same as everywhere I else I think. 3 or 4" of the usual yellow stuff. I haven't been up there for a while. Should I have more or less insulation over the bathroom?

sounds ok - just wondered if there was a cold spot making the condensation worse, but it doesn't seem like it if you have that much insulation.

HG mould spray i swear is the most amazing stuff ever invented I get mine from b&q.

The best way I remember is to clean with sugar soap.. dry and gloss the patch then a couple of coats of emulsion afterwards.

There could be a leak coming in from above if it's only the ceiling that is affected?

I was going to mention a leak too, we once had terrible mould above the shower, ceiling fell down shortly after.

another vote for HG Mould Remover spray. Spray it on and leave it, no more mould.

Dettol mould and mildew remover spray is brilliant! But I would look at what's causing it.

I am in Germany and here they say you should open your bathroom window wide for a good ten minutes, then shut it and that this is more effective against mould than leaving it slightly open the whole time.

In my bathroom the walls and ceiling get condensation. It actually drips of the extractor. I was sad enought to go through the motions just now to see what is going on. The tiling seems fairly dry. Its the painted areas that the condensation gathers the most. I think they are a soft sheen paint. There actually is a tiny leak in the corner of the shower. Replacing the silicone over the next couple of days.

I got a cheap mop from Lidl like this, put bleach solution on the microfibre cloth, squeezed out excess liquid then simply mopped the ceiling. It was surprisingly quick and effective!
