Short Curtains In Living Room

JRsandCoffee · 22/10/2014 15:03

I'm having a debate with myself. It goes like this....

"Living room - long curtains, simples"

"But the room is long and big and the windows are wide but only 1.2m deep and the ceiling not that high and they are on three walls taking up much room and if long curtains anything under the windows is a PITA and we have a toddler...and the window sills also sit not far off waist height so long curtains might actually look ridiculous"

Odd logic suggests to me that no amount of long curtain is going to take away the slightly wide and low aspect of the room and attempts to do this may actually look absurd so better to reflect and embrace it? It's a lovely light room!

Any words of wisdom?

I cant really picture your room, but in general I think short curtains in a living room look off....

I love big curved drapes when tied back - would that sweep over one of those wooden tie back thingies help alleviate the width/length argument? Toddlers love them for hide & seek - whats not to love? :)

JRsandCoffee · 22/10/2014 15:11

Normally I would agree but the lovely big drapes you describe I'm pretty sure wouldn't work as I think they would be too dominant/ argue with an already rather strong carpet that I can't justify changing! Hmmmm.

We have a radiator under and a sofa in front of our living room window, so long curtains wouldn't work at all.

Surely curtains are for covering windows, not the wall below, that's the job of paint or paper.

Roman blinds?

Flump007 · 22/10/2014 15:34

Blinds and no curtains???

JRsandCoffee · 22/10/2014 16:48

It has blinds already, I just can't do without curtains!

I don't get this long curtain thing. All my rooms have radiators under the windows. One has a deep windowsill so curtains can't hang over it, and I just don't like blinds.

What the hell is wrong with short curtains?

AnnoyingOrange · 22/10/2014 17:04

Me too fellow Orange

Radiators are usually under the window IME

SwanneeKazoo · 22/10/2014 17:23

How about a pair of full length dress curtains? They're not intended to be drawn so they needn't be wide enough to cover the window, but they will give some height to the room.

PossumPoo · 22/10/2014 17:53

I have short curtains as radiators are under the windows. Long curtains would block the heat Confused

Arsey I personally think dressing your house on-trend and not what actually suits it is off Grin

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 22/10/2014 17:56

We need a pic. Your windows are 1.2m deep?

Artandco · 22/10/2014 18:01

I just have shutters in living room

Curtains would be too cluttered

White walls and white shutters here so in the day they are open and light streams in

arseyfarcey · 22/10/2014 18:36

Lol possompoo nowt to do with on trend for me, all to do with cosiness of a lounge and it's purpose for me. If i had radiators under windows I'd have dress curtains and blinds probably

JRsandCoffee · 22/10/2014 20:18

Can't do a picture, sorry, not mine yet but organising ahead. I considered dress curtains but decided against, I just don't much like the look of closed blinds and will probably have the up totally when we are in as like the view free of slats!

I hadn't considered shutters, might investigate!

I just don't like them. Even in my kitchen where the radiator is under the window, I have long curtains over the radiator.

Ziggyzoom · 22/10/2014 20:36

I can just imagine my husband's face if I tried to discuss "dress curtains". Grin
I get it, but he would think I'd seriously lost the plot!

Orangeanddemons · 22/10/2014 21:12

But aren't mock curtains kind of fussy? I like simplicity in all things winow
