How to make a well child-proof?

Hi. Am moving into a new (rented) property in a few days. There is a well in the garden, which currently has a cover over it, but not one that I'd be happy for my children to stand on (not that I'm planning to let them stand on it, but they don't always do as I ask). I have the landlady's permission to cover the well, but she wants me to use a cover that doesn't block out the light, as there are plants inside the well. I've looked around online, and see that there are specially designed well covers for around £200 and upwards, but this is more than I'd hoped to spend. Does anyone have any good suggestions or ideas about how to do this without spending a lot of money? I want a rigid cover so that it wouldn't bend inwards if any naughty child were to stand on it. The diameter of the opening of the well is 80cm. Very grateful for any suggestions!
