I want your shed advice

About to move to a rented house with little outdoor storage so am thinking of buying a shed. It would need to stand on grass. Would aim to get DP to build it to keep costs down. Does all this sound like a bad idea? What do I need to know? Any better ideas for outdoor storage?

It needs to be on level ground. We laid paving slabs in lines for the timbers that the floor sits on to go on, so four lines of slabs for the four hefty timbers that run front to back, the base of the shed timbers then sit on top going side to side. Really easy as long as it is level, am sure someone who knows the terms and can explain it better will be along soon!

You could always get a couple of those plastic storage boxes or wall cupboard storage things as an alternative.

I would check your lease though, as a landlord I wouldn't let someone erect a structure without asking me first. Not being picky, just that if someone put up a shed that was cobbled together and looked awful I would have to go to the bother of removing it if they left and didn't take it with them/defaulted on payments etc., etc.

Wood should be kept off the ground as it will be wet and rot quickly.

On concrete or paving slabs and raised up so it never stands in puddles and air can circulate underneath.

Thanks very much for this! Will defo look into paving slabs if we put it up (and, of course, will ask the landlord first). We might be able to get away with a bike shed, which would be easier because we could have it on the existing concrete against the house without blocking out the windows ...
