Bedroom Blue or Red?

HelpMeGetOutOfHere · 17/10/2014 14:40

I'm decorating my bedroom this weekend and can't decide between blue or red. Its currently cream walls which I would like to keep as its a rented house so can just be freshened up. One of the long walls that our bed is on has mirrored wardrobes with a gap for the bed (hope that makes sense), our furniture is oak.

because of the way the wardrobes are we can only have roller blinds maybe roman blinds as the wardrobes come right up to the window edge and no way to hang curtain pole or track.

Behind the bed head currently I a feature wall of brownand green floral wallpaper, the landlady has given us permission to paint that a plain colour, which I then want to base accessories around. My bedding currently is cream, with a pink/plum bird and tree pattern, which I like but am not desperate to keep.

I saw this bedding in the range and really like it. www.therange.co.uk/canterbury-blue-printed-bedding---matching-items-available/duvet-covers/the-range/fcp-product/55702 and was all set to get a teal/duck egg blue black out blind, but then I saw this one www.therange.co.uk/canterbury-red-printed-bedding/bedding/the-range/fcp-product/89305 (same bedding different colour) and am now thinking this blind with that bedding www.therange.co.uk/garnet-red-thermal-blackout-roller-blind/blackout-blinds/the-range/fcp-product/47174 and then a nice picture on the red wall behind us.

H says blue, but im really torn and really love the red with white spots and have seen this bedding in dunelm for the 'other' duvet set www.dunelm-mill.com/shop/red-country-spot-collection-duvet-cover-446923#5050390052689

I don't want to spend a fortune as while I am pretty certain our tenancy is secure (been here just over 2.6 years) I have a fear of spending lots and then being given notice. have just noticed hey do the dunelm one in blue as well but im not so keen as I am on the dunelm red spotty. www.dunelm-mill.com/shop/duck-egg-country-spot-collection-duvet-cover-324904

thanks

also a little bit worried I might be being influenced by the season and that red will look lovely in the winter and then too dark and heavy in the summer, but I really need o get rid of the awful feature wall wallpaper left by the previous tenants, and want some colour in the room as the whole house is cream!

current wallpaper I very similar to this but a dark brown background cream leaves and green flowers www.diy.com/rooms/super-fresco-paste-the-paper-poppy-cream-green-wallpaper/53917_BQ.prd

I really like the Canterbury red set with the blind - but personally I wouldn't do a red feature wall with it as I think it might be too much, I'd stick to cream throughout - boring I know but the pattern on the duvet is busy, I'd only do a feature wall if the linen was plain but I'm quite "safe" (ok boring!). Could you do the wall with cream wallpaper that has a very subtle pattern on it to give a bit more interest? Just thinking if walls were plain you can then more easily change the duvet set in the future?

Also like the Canterbury red set better. But would put a lime green wall behind (to tone with the cushion in the pic) and buy the cushion. Bit meh about the red spotty duvet tbh.

Red. Blue is too cold and boring for any room.

Floggingmolly · 17/10/2014 16:57

Another one for the red, it's lovely.

Seems pretty unanimous so far then. I was just going to paint not paper the wall as didn't want any more pattern than necessary.

H doesn't love any of them but says he's coming round to the red. If I paint the wall behind the bed cream, I'll need to redo all of the walls but if I paint a different colour I can get away with just the bit behind the bed head. We painted over everything cream about 3/4 months ago as was a bit grubby.

Our bed is black wrought iron and the carpet is cream. Will need to buy a rug as it's not great condition carpet and currently everything is mismatched.

We always make an effort to get the dc bedrooms nicely accessorised new blinds bedding all matching furniture etc and our room has just become a mismatch of furniture so we treated ourselves to matching ikea malm drawers, three in a row. We are restricted with the wardrobes as built in but was thinking of changing the knobs as currently they are cream plastic. Was thinking some glass ones or ceramic or even just cheapy metal ones. Just to make them look a bit better.

Aah see the problem with matching the walls then. Yes actually thinking about it the red wall will work, and i think changing the knobs is a good idea, just find ones you like unless you have something in particular to tie in with them e.g. If you have chrome fittings then match with those or if you have a chandelier style light glass ones would tie in. I know what you mean about kids bedrooms coming first, took us years to do ours properly! Good luck it will look great Smile

Blue. Blue is known to be restful and red is stimulating which can lead to poor sleep.

HelpMeGetOutOfHere · 18/10/2014 16:52

Well I didn't like any of the bedding or blinds when I went to buy this morning.

Ended up with plum walls and a plum linen blind. On the plus side this matched in with my existing bedding, but now need to find a new spare set.

The range bedding, whilst I know it is cheap looked it. The material had a very open weave to it and you could see it was a printed design not woven.

On another plus side I finally got new light shades for the boys room and for the hallway and landing. Smile

LondonGirl83 I think it's the opposite?

Red is relaxing and blue is stimulating.

Research has shown blue light wakes up people and red light relaxes people.

I would go for red.
