Does this sound alot for a full structural survey?

I've been recommended a couple of surveyors. One quoted £1275 invl VAT and another was higher.

The property is £825,000 and its the south east?

It sounds a huge amount but if that's the going rate then I need to get it booked!

I paid less that £500 in 2012 for a 5 bed detached in the north west. I would expect it to cost more now and in the south east but I think I would shop around a bit more!

I've got loads of quotes today for a house worth 230k in the south east. Most expensive being about £850 but averaging £550. They do go up depending on price though.

Had one recently £525. It was extremely detailed. No test pits dug though, that would have been more. I think what I paid is about right OP.

The surveyor did say it was based upon price of property because the more expensive the property the more it would cost if a mistake was made and they were liable.

I think that is how much it costs, I was quoted £1300 + VAT for a £1m house house in London.

Kitsmummy · 16/10/2014 19:06

I have never heard of a full structural survey costing only £500!!!

I thnk that price is about right op

I got a detailed one for 350 (23 pages) but then my house is a fraction of yours in terms of cost and I'm in Birmingham

I'd say the people saying £500 have had a survey but not a full structural one. Sounds about right to me.

Elvish · 16/10/2014 21:24

Think the cost difference is an area thing, mine was a full structural and well worth the money.

RandomMess · 16/10/2014 21:31

I had a full structural for £350 (and it was thorough) but it's the northwest!

msfreud · 16/10/2014 21:34

I had a full structural for £450 in London zone 4 this summer, house cost £287k. It does go up depending on the value of the house as well as the type of house - a 5 bed detached is going to cost more to survey than a 2 bed mid terrace.
