DIY conveyancing - any experience?

I need a bit of simple legal work done - transferring a share of the freehold on my flat - and solicitors are quoting me £500+vat to get it done, when it's basically filling in a couple of forms and filing them with the land registry. But the thought of attempting it without a solicitor is making me nervous.

Does anyone have any experience of DIYing this kind of thing? Is it a bit like doing your tax return, which you don't need an accountant for if it's a simple job?

From a Scottish perspective, the conveyancing itself is straightforward, as is registration (though be aware of fraud/money laundering regulations which require you to provide identification)
But there are other things that require to be investigated - tax implications, searches over the property for securities, against the parties for inhibitions etc.

Not a simple job in many cases, depends on circumstances. Is the share of freehold being transferred to you or by you? How is the share defined? Are there other flatowners or freeholders? Is the property mortgaged?
In my experience these jobs were often time- consuming as several people may have to consent and sign all bthe paperwork, which may include tax forms. I used to charge around 500 pounds for this several years ago, and sometimes felt this didn't cover all the time spent dealing with it.

Thank you.

AuntySib, it's being transferred from previous owner to us. It's a 50% share, the other freeholder downstairs is lined up and ready to sign too. We do have a mortgage on the property, but on the leasehold.
