Loft rooms and planning/building regs

We bought our house a few years ago and it already had a loft room added, with velux windows and staircase, albeit narrow.

We bought an indemnity policy via our solicitor because the current owners couldn't produce anything regarding the building of it and there's nothing on the planning portal.

How likely is it that the council would take action us if we went and spoke with them? Could they do anything?

Eek! I didn't realise I could get into bother about it. We've been here over 4 years now but previous buyers were sketchy on details. Surveyor believed all to fit regs bar fire door and stairs are just about the right size.

I wanted to speak to the council over other ideas but if it'll lead to problems I'll keep schtum. Thank you

If its out of line with planning, action can only take place if the breach happened within the last 4 years.

If the building is unsafe, building control can force you to take action anyway.

Your indemnity policy will almost certainly be invalidated if you bring the problem to the authorities so don't! If you think its unsafe though fix it.
