Would I be able to paint this table a different colour?

I like the style but dd wants a blue one.

Would I need to rub it down first or can I just paint it?

It's been stained and then has a lacquer over that so it isn't the case of rubbing off the top layer of paint. However if you sand off the lacquer and then cover with a good primer/undercoat to even out the staining, you should get a reasonable painted finish I would have thought.
