Have just got this through in the post...am a first time buyer. how close are we to completion?

It doesn't really have much to do with how close you are - depends on the chain and the vendors in general. I signed mine a week before exchange when I met solicitor to sign other paperwork.

We signed ours pretty early on (4 weeks before exchange?).

I signed mine today, we're hoping to exchange next week and move the week after.
