Advice on what colour to paint my hallway

I would love some advice from you lovely mumsnetters

I have a semi detached edwardian property with a large hallway, high ceilings and stairs to the left with the rest of the hallway leading to the kitchen. The floor is dark and the woodwork in white.

The walls are split in two with a wooden rail type thing in between.. The bottom half is a bright bright bright red - and I hate it. It really darkens the area. We have also just painted our lounge Crown mellow sage and the house now doesn't seem to flow going from the red to green.

So I fancy a greenish colour. The top half of the wall is neutral sandy coloured - what do you think would go on the bottom half? I want a nice green colour not garish and not too dark.

Thanks

Willow tree is lovely - the Dulux one as is overtly olive although depends on how much light you have as could be a little dark. We have it but only on one wall for that reason!

I've just done the skirtings/wood in my hall and discovered Craig and Rose paint which has some lovely period colours that might suit your house?

I love that greeny colour you are trying to describe. If you go on farrow and balls website they send you a free colour chart book and inspiration book, that may help you choose the type of colour you like..

We have just painted our Edwardian hallway in Dulux timeless classics graceful green. It is almost grey but with a sagey green tone and is not dark at all. It looks really good with white woodwork and high ceilings (and hopefully dark floors but we haven't done this yet).Sorry for terrible photography skills.

Thank you all.

I think farrow and ball will be out of my price range.

I love the colour of your hallway bananas my bannister rail is identical to yours. The only issue is I just want to paint the bottom half not the top - which I won't be able to reach either! I'm not sure the graceful green will go as the top half is like a beigey taupy sandy colour - I've attached pics so you'll see what I mean

We are eyeing up Craig and Rose Soft Green. I'm a fan of their paints and eggshell, get a lovely chalky finish with great depth (can buy from B&Q). Just done DS's room with Pale Mortlake Cream and Smalt.

Do you like blue? I think it would look smart with taupe.

It might surprise you Rogue - in real life it looks different, almost grey. Really hard to tell without a tester. Looking at your pictures I'm wishing we still had our picture rail!

What about one of the Light & Space paints - Nordic Spa? Have hallway half painted (by mate who seems to have lost interest in finishing the job Hmm ) and it does seem to make it brighter.
