Help! Sliding doors have fallen off built-in wardrobe

Hi mumsnetters, I'm wondering if anyone can help.

The sliding doors on my built-in wardrobe fell off yesterday and I haven't a clue who to get in to assess whether it can be fixed and how much it would cost.

The doors came away from their overhead supporting structure which is attached to the room ceiling.

The mechanism is tricky to get to as there's a shelf in the way, which is fixed into place and which I can't remove without probably pulling the whole wardrobe down.

And there is a part missing anyway, which unfortunately I threw away as I didn't realise at the time that it was part of the wardrobe fittings etc.

I have only recently bought the flat. The folks who owned this flat before me carried out loads of crap DIY and it seems everything is falling down if prodded too hard! Although the wardrobe was working okay till I broke it

Has anyone had any experience of this type of thing: ie. the cost of repairing it or getting the doors replaced, or - if that's going to be expensive, should I replace the whole thing?

The wardrobe isn't very nice - white veneer chipboard wardrobe with glass fronted sliding doors - and I would love to replace it but similar wardrobes at Ikea cost about £500, which I haven't got the budget for at the moment.

Ours kept falling off too. Dh could get them back on. Ended up with Dh removing them, pulling out the wall and rebuilding from scratch and making it into a custom built in wardrobe and buying new tracks from B&Q to re attach the old doors that were in great condition and very expensive, but too big for the hole they were in. He said the tracks were not quite level and that was part of the problem of them coming off. They haven't come off since the new track was put in and he made sure it was spot on with the level.

Thanks for replying Squinkies. I'm glad your DH managed to sort out your wardrobe doors. Sadly, I don't have that level of knowledge or confidence and will have to get someone in.

Should I call a carpenter or a handyman?

A handyman should be able to help you.

Same thing happened to mine. Carpenter quoted 75 pounder per door which were made from MDF.

I had two sliding mirror doors and the sliding mechanism replaced on a built in wardrobe recently and it was £350 for everything. Now slides smoothly and I am very pleased with the workmanship.
