Drawing the outline of a room..

Probably not explaining that properly but I've got a really odd shape front room which we are wanting to 'do up' before Christmas. I'd like to plan it properly and this includes maybe moving the gas fire into a corner to free up a wall and buying furniture to fit in properly. So, the question is - I can't draw at all, any tips on how to do it please?

I'd use squared paper.
Measure the walls and put them, in ratio, onto the squared paper.
If you haven't got any, then just do it in proportion - depending if you prefer feet/inches or metres/cm, work out a simple proportion and copy it onto the paper.

As most furniture is measured in cm go for that.

My standard scale is 5cm on paper is equal to 1m in real life. So 1cm on the paper is 20cm in real life.

So if your room is 4.4m long that line on paper would be 22cm long. Does that help? As you draw the line you can count up in 20's each time you pass 1 cm on the ruler.

You could make it a different scale but I find that scale means you can fit most rooms onto an A4 piece of paper (unless your rooms are massive)

I usually draw mine out then use tracing paper over the top to draw stuff in or cut out pieces of paper to match furniture I have to keep or cannot change. I keep the original drawing so I don't have to re-draw it when I come to decorate again (mainly the kid's bedrooms)

Do you have an ipad or iPhone? There is an app called Magic Plan that works out floor plans using the camera.

Yes, an iPad....off to look for it

Thanks!

I've just done my kitchen. Which was tricky as it's an odd shape and no corners are visible but it's done a pretty good job. You can then edit the measurements to fine tune it I think.
