Knaresborough

Anyone know Knaresborough? We're living in Hertfordshire at the moment but hankering after a move up north. I grew up in West Yorkshire but we'd prefer to be in Harrogate or York. Knaresborough is well placed for commuting and seems lovely with good primaries. And vaguely affordable housing compared to where we are now. Am I missing something? There must be a drawback! Any pointers and inside info would be gratefully received.

I live just outside York, but on the Harrogate/Knaresborough side. The company I work for has its main office in Knaresborough. I think it's a nice little town, some nice independent shops and eating places, easy to get to York, Harrogate and Leeds and v handy for the A1, there are a couple of business parks with some reasonable sized companies if you're going to be looking for work. It is much smaller than York or Harrogate though - this is good in that it seems to have some decent sense of community and the traffic is much better than the bigger towns, but it may not be so good if you're used to big city living as you might find that there's not a lot on your doorstep.

Hope that helps!

Thanks, tateandlyle, that's really helpful and reassuring. It sounds sort of perfect for what we're after. We're living in a market town now (although admittedly twice the size and only half an hour from London) and we love it. We don't miss being in the city at all. We really want to get away from that. We'd like DD to go to a small school and we'd like to get involved with the community. I just don't want to move somewhere where everyone already knows everyone and they're not open to new people. Do you think that it's quite a friendly place?

I'm not sure about knaresborough itself, but quite a few of the villages between York and Harrogate (the Ouseburns/Hammertons, etc) do have a bit of a reputation for everyone being related. I think you'd be better off in the town though. It's true what they say though, Yorkshire is a friendly place and people do always comment on that when they visit from the south!

Thanks, tateandlyle. Yep, think we're more suited to a town and not quite ready for a village. We have some family in Harrogate and Bradford so I hope we wouldn't feel isolated. I just don't want to go somewhere insular. But it all sounds very promising. Thanks again.

Knaresborough is a lovely little town, very close to Harrogate but also excellent road links to Leeds and York. Schools are good, and beautiful Dales nearby. Great place to live!

Knaresborough is a great town and most areas are within walking distance of the town centre. The buses to Harrogate are every 15-20 minutes or so and the trains to Harrogate or York are every half an hour.

I grew up in Harrogate and my parents did the opposite move to you, they now live in one of the new towns in Hertfordshire.

Thanks for the helpful comments, everyone. We're going for a scout around the town in a few weeks. Exciting!
