Ideas for white living room walls?

Rented living room has good proportions, comfortable sofas (with white throws), but need some ideas for brightening up the walls. We don't own many pictures to hang, just a mirror etc. A friend suggested cutting patterns from existing wallpaper, I am warming to the idea. Any other creative ideas?

Thanks!

Browse second hand book shops/charity shops/ junk shops for vintage books with good pictures that you can mount and frame yourself. Botanical plates and art books are obvious, but I've sometimes been surprised at the books that have beautiful illustrations.

Check your local art galleries for posters linked to their exhibitions. Prints of lesser known works by artists you like, framed, can be a good way to get cheap pictures without it looking too generic/dentist's waiting room.

Inspect your 'stuff' for alternatives to pictures. We've got an old prayer mat my dad picked up on his travels in our study, and some decorative plates in the hall.

Start to invest some money (it doesn't have to be loads - obviously according to your budget) into pictures/wall art of some description. It doesn't really matter what it is, but if you love it, buy it. Yes, it seems indulgent, but it'll last longer than a new top, or a DVD box set!
