Hi all, my husband and I are considering relocating from Oxfordshire to Hexham, to be closer to my family. We have 3 children ages 8, 6 & 4. I'd love to hear from anyone who knows the area and who can share insights & opinions on family life in / around Hexham. Many thanks :-)

Hi there - I realise this is a really old post but I searched for hexham and this post came up.
We're thinking about moving to hexham and I was just wondering how you've found it (if you moved in the end)?
I have 2 young children but I'm a bit worried it might be a bit boring. We'd be moving from a busy large city. We're looking for a smaller community and better schools.
Thanks

It’s a small market town, but beautiful and close to an area of outstanding beauty. My ex of seven years grew up there and we visited his family regularly (we lived in Newcastle). I got the impression there was a lot of sports activities available and the school was highly regarded.

Bonfire night they have a fab firework display in the centre of the town - I have no idea what the park is called.

You’re only about an hour away from Newcastle, regular trains too.

I’d say it’s a lovely place to bring up a family.

I've only visited a few times but it's very nice - the only thing is, my local friend says the traffic is bad in/out of town at peak times, but you may be used to this where you are. A charming small town, good amenities (both large supermarkets and indie cafes/shops), picturesque all around it.

Excellent hospital. My bf went for an op there and I took her. The surgeon came in and chatted to her and came after to tell her how it went. Staff fabulous. Lovely and clean and single rooms.

Great market. My friend and I go occasionally we don’t live there. Traffic can get bad occasionally as it is a narrow bottle neck. On train route toCarlisle and Newcastle. Lovely countryside around it and great coast further on. Alnwick Castle nearby ( some of HP filmed here) a great day out.

Thank you all for your replies. It looks so beautiful and good schooling for the kids is really appealing.

I just had a quick look on Rightmove - this is absolutely gorgeous, but Hexham in general looks so expensive!

It is expensive, but lovely. The Sele is where they do the fireworks and that road isn’t too far from the shops. To be fair, it’s a small town so most places are walkable.

Good luck with the move.
