Ideas for dark room

Our lounge is north facing with an extension on the back. Although the extension is nearly as wide as the lounge, part of the original wall is still there as patio doors were removed and I guess it was cheaper to just leave the present supporting wall in place.

What can be done structurally to let more like in? Can we widen the gap where the patio door was? Alternatively, a couple of houses backing onto us have a roof (rather than flat roof we have on extension) with a dormer window or roof light fitted. Anyone know if this could improve the light? There is plenty of light in the morning, but as the sun goes around the house it lessens, but mid afternoon is over the roof of the extension.

Cosmetically, does anyone have any suggestions for colour scheme or anything else.

Lots of mirrors, and plain light coloured walls. We've had to settle for a room that looks cold and dark in the summer, but is lovely and cosy in the winter.

We used the dulux light and space paint for our room which sounds exactly like yours, when they created the extension they made a 'window' in our internal wall to let more light in through the old kitchen. Mirrors and good lighting help a lot. We have blue walls and cream carpets (it's a playroom) the wood is either white gloss or natural wood. If money was no object I would have a sun tube, but we are looking at a shallow pitched roof and some velux windows in the dining room

Embrace the coziness. We have a similar layout (conservatory not extension). We've painted walls stone blue to the picture rail, with a white chimney breast, one white wall and wood flooring - with the woodburner going its super cosy :)
