Now that we've realised we can't do it ourselves we need to save up to get the interior of our house in reasonable shape. Please could so done help us figure out an amount to aim for? I know it will be very approximate but we don't want to bother workers to ask for a quote when we don't have the money yet.

It's a big house, around 2,000 sq ft with 5 beds 3 reception rooms and needs all wallpaper and lining paper stripped, walls skimmed and painted. It has high ceilings. Paint needs to be stripped from cornicing, skirting boards, door and window frames and staircase and repainted. Floors need carpet taken up and wood floors sanded and finished.

Can anyone please give a range to expect? I know it will be loads of money and am mentally prepared for a large figure. Thank you!!

We're having ours done soon at a cost of £10k + VAT, slightly different to you as we're having new doors through the whole house (15!), new skirting, replacing carpets with laminate, skimming ceilings, repainting and some electrical work, this is for lounge, dining room/family room, study, hall and 3 of the bedrooms. This includes labour and all materials apart from the flooring as we still need to choose that. HTH Grin

Depends on where you are in the Uk. Here in SE most decorators charge a day rate of £150. The guy I use is cheaper (£120), but he isn't a 'precision' painter, but that's a compromise I am prepared to make! It tends to take him nearly a week to do a large double bedroom with lots of new plaster and woodwork. So maybe you can estimate based upon your house from there.

We have similar size house 2200 sq ft and for the decorating alone (stripping, re wall papering, painting all walls and woodwork, staircases) we're going to be paying £11,500. We were also quoted £16,000 for the same work but went with the lower quote. This doesn't include stripping floor and sanding. We are in london.

Thanks, all. We're up north so hopefully it will be on the cheaper side of things! I'll estimate £10k+ VAT and start saving towards that. Then there are the built-ins we're wanting plus the garden seriously needs landscaping. Saving up for all this could take a while!!

Could you do some yourselves to keep costs down? We do painting and stripping paper but get people in to do the hard bits like wall papering and awkward to paint areas.
