How do I do a copper effect ceiling?

For my bathroom. I love the idea but I'm not sure how to do it and how practical it would be. I'm assuming would have to seal it with something afterwards? We are having the ceiling replastered so it would be straight on to that (or prepared as needed).

Can't actually find anything online about how to do this (although no idea where to look) but I know you are all wonderful and knowledgeable.

Thanks

You can buy copper leaf so I suppose you could use that. Not sure of the technique exactly, but will he painstaking and take a long time. You'll need a base coat of paint and the correct adhesive. Once it's on you can protect it with lacquer/varnish. I'd be worried that with the moisture in a bathroom you'd get verdigris over time!

Have a look on YouTube for tutorials on applying metal leaf.

Can you find a metallic effect paint instead? Plastikote or Hammerite may do something suitable.

Oh metallic effect paint, I like that idea, am off to Google, sounds much easier!

Actually Reastie - Crown and Dulux both do metallic effect paints. I remembered a friend has a metallic lilac wall in one room at their place. Not my cup of tea, but the metallic effect is a good one.

Ahh yes, I've just found it on their site. I wonder if they do tester pots Grin and I also wonder if it's suitable for a bathroom. Might email them and see what they say.

If you can find a metallic paint then that might be the best option. I think we might be nearing peak copper and it could look quite dated, quite quickly.

hmm, that's interesting ham . We also have a, antique roll top bath, I'm now wondering whether to paint the outside of it copper (it's always been white) instead/as well...

I didn't even know it was a thing.... How about silver instead?!

Reastie · 03/08/2014 19:17

I'm not sure as our shower is silver but our loo, sink, and bath are gold taps so I already feel like the gold/silver is confused. Maybe I should just paint the roll top bath a colour, but I don't know what colour to do!

You have a mix of silver and gold fittings and want a copper ceiling...I'm struggling to picture this. It could be a bit too much, have you got a picture you could post?

KitschinSynch · 03/08/2014 19:38

Sorry to derail a little OP but HamandPlaques how do you know what the trends are for decoration? Any magazines/websites you can suggest?

Reastie · 03/08/2014 19:49

Erm, yes, thinking about it maybe it would be too much. I'm thinking of getting chrome taps so everything is silver coloured bar the loo to make it match a bit more, but can't change the loo as it's one like this with goldy pipe. Hmm I guess I was thinking I'll never get it fully matching and the misatch work of a Victorian themed bathroom might work (we very much have victorian wallpaper going up). In my head I thought copper was inbetween of gold and silver so would kind of merge the two, but I know nothing about what I speak. Would be happy to pm you a pic and my plans?

By all means. Have you lo

Lelivre · 03/08/2014 20:40

Sorry..
Have you looked at houzz? There is a website and app available, you can enter key words and search by room and save in your own idea book to refer to later.

HamAndPlaques · 03/08/2014 20:44

YY to houzz. In terms of magazines, I'd recommend Elle Deco for the higher-end stuff and Ideal Home for the more practical, high-street angle.

Lelivre · 03/08/2014 20:45

for example
