Anyone had the single pane glass in sash windows replaced with double glazed glass?

So we would be keeping the original sashes but just replacing the glass and getting them re-weighted. We have had someone out to quote and he said it would be possible to do, I'm just not sure how much is a reasonable price.

Would anyone be willing to share what they paid and did it make much difference with outside noise and heat retention?

We are getting our windows done at the moment. It's a different scenario. We are replacing the window frames like for like as the wood is in poor condition and getting double glazing in the new timber frames. If you are in the northeast free to PM me if you want the name of the guy that is doing ours for a second opinion.

Thanks monkeymummy but we are in the north west. The guy we are thinking of using is actually based in the midlands but is happy to travel anywhere!

So are you replacing the whole window frame and glass? Would you mind telling me roughly how much it is for one standard size sash?

Ours are working out around £400 per window. So our bay which has one slightly large sash in the middle and two slim ones either side would be around £1000.

Does that sound right?

We did this last year in one room. We had new sashes made as the glass panels are obviously much thicker and wouldn't fit neatly into the original ones. They reused the existing sash weights but added extra lead to balance them. Was £500 per (large) sash window so yours sounds very similar. Definitely worth doing - looks great and much much warmer. Now saving to do the rest of the house...

It sounds like a good quote. Only a couple of our windows are sash and they are stained glass, but on the itemised quote it saysfor the sash, "new sliding sash system, stained glass triple glazed, in hardwood, inclusive of labour and materials £820". I don't think we're comparing like with like since my quote is replacing the hard wood.

Ok doesn't sound too dissimilar then. Obviously if you are replacing the wood too then yours would be more expensive, and that quote is interesting to know Phalarope.
