Extension on a mid-terrace house?

I'm sure I'm not the first to do this, but I'm wanting to extend out into the garden to make a good sized kitchen (3 metres) and would like make this two storey, to make the bedroom a more useable space BUT I'm worried that it'll be turned down as might end up limiting the light to the neighbours rear window.
I'm a single mum with limited budget, so don't want to waste money on planning etc. if it's likely to be rejected.
Any one had a similar situation? Any ideas?

I may be wrong as I haven't actually gone through the process myself, but I'm pretty sure that if your neighbour is within a certain distance ( which would definitely be the case in a mid terraced house) then you can only do a single story extension as it would, as you said, restrict their light. I am basing this purely on living in an area with a lot of terraced houses and a lot of people desperate to extend every which way they can as it's so expensive round here, and I've never known any one do a 2 storey one! You can do a 3m ground floor extension within permitted development, as I'm sure you know.

Well I live in a semi and next door did a two story extension on the party wall side. Which I'd have thought would affect our light the same as a terrace extension. They got planning permission.

We have mid terrace house and a 3.5 m one storey extension got turned down because of light even though neither neighbour complained. It was the busy body 3 doors up. Could you do a small extension and a loft conversion?

Rejection of a planning application often has nothing to do with neighbours complaining, it has all to do with planning policy at the local council. If an extension complies with policy it will get permission irrespective of adverse comments. I would speak to your local planning office for advice - they will probably now charge for this but it is way more expensive to submit plans! Also, look at their web site for a steer and look at what has benn permitted in your road.
